Album Review: Slowly Slowly – Forgiving Spree

Forgiving Spree is an album where pop rock melodies reach new heights, allowing Slowly Slowly to showcase their unique style as a band. Focused on the themes of twin flames and forgiveness, it explores the idea that you can love someone wholeheartedly despite mistakes—because, after all, we’re only human.

The album resonates with themes of love and a reminder to stay true to our core values: honesty, authenticity, and truthfulness. Twin flames are the end game—when you find someone who cares deeply for you and accepts your flaws completely.

The title track, “Forgiving Spree,” immerses listeners in a galaxy of guitars and energetic drumming. Layered with lyrics about bad luck and superstitious omens, it’s a buoyant opener with a catchy rhythm and chorus that sets a strong tone for the album.

“Gimme the Wrench” follows as an anthemic powerhouse, symbolising the need to fix problems when faced with seemingly impossible odds. It’s a track full of defiance and determination.

“Hurricane” delivers upbeat pop rock energy with a resonant chorus and playful lyrical cadence. Beneath its surface lies a darker narrative—one of life’s unexpected blows and the chaotic emotional aftermath. It captures the feeling of being swept up in forces beyond your control.

“All Time” stands out as one of the album’s best tracks. It captures the feeling of love as a safe, sacred space—a bubble where you feel grounded and deeply cherished. The reference to “the ruins of Pompeii” adds a poetic and almost Shakesperian edge, conjuring up images of enduring love through destruction.

“That’s That” adds flair to the album with its unexpected inclusion of saxophone, emphasising  Slowly Slowly’s commitment to creative instrumentation and experimental confidence. It’s a fun, catchy number that broadens the album’s sonic palette.

Finally, “Born Free” closes Forgiving Spree on a deeply existential and emotional note. With its melancholic tone and introspective lyrics, it offers a sentimental send-off. Lead singer Ben Stewart’s vocals feel intimate and raw, leaving the listener with a lasting impression.

Forgiving Spree is a 9-track album that gives both loyal fans and new listeners space to absorb its emotional weight. With love at its core and an introspective edge, Slowly Slowly continues to embrace their distinctive style and heartfelt lyricism. They remain a special band, one that sings about love — truly, madly, and deeply.
